what i’ve learned after 18 years of photographing higher education graduation ceremonies
But also, how has it been 18 years? Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way and a some favorites from our whirlwind of a May.
Go with the flow - Graduation day has a mind of its own. Timelines shift, students wander, and things will go sideways, don’t fight it. Some of the best moments come from rolling with the unexpected.
A solid team is everything - You can't be everywhere at once, especially when thousands of students are walking across the stage. Having a reliable crew makes all the difference. Good communication, quick reflexes, and trust go a long way. I can not say enough good things about the MKP team I’ve built over the years - they are truly my dream team (thank you!)
Campus familiarity for the win - After years of shooting, you learn where the light hits just right at 10 a.m., which steps get the best cap toss photo, and where students naturally celebrate with their families. Familiarity with the location helps anticipate key moments and make sure we are positioned perfectly to capture gold.
It’s about the moments, not perfection - Some of the best shots aren’t perfectly composed—they’re real. A tight hug, a flying cap, a tearful parent—those candid moments tell the real story of the day.
Congrats to all the grads of 2025!
